Around half the tutor requests we receive ask for a female teacher, and most come from parents of daughters. It is a request people sometimes make apologetically, as though it needed justifying. It does not — but it is worth understanding what it actually buys, because the honest answer varies a great deal with the age of the child.
For young children, it is mostly about the person
For a girl of five or six, the tutor's gender rarely affects the learning directly. What affects it is warmth, patience and whether the child looks forward to the class. Many families find female tutors particularly good with young children, and that is a fair observation — but it is a tendency, not a rule, and there are male tutors who are wonderful with small children and female tutors who are better suited to adults.
If your daughter is young and you have no particular preference, choose on the trial class rather than on the category. Watch whether she is relaxed, whether she is corrected without being deflated, and whether she wants to come back.
Around ten to twelve, the calculation changes
The picture shifts as girls approach adolescence, and this is the point at which the request stops being a preference and starts being practical. Recitation is a vocal, exposed activity: you make sounds in front of someone and are corrected on how your mouth is forming them. A self-conscious eleven- or twelve-year-old will often go quiet rather than risk it.
The failure mode is rarely a dramatic refusal. It is a girl who recites more softly each week, volunteers less, stops asking questions and eventually finds reasons to miss the class. Parents frequently read this as losing interest in the Quran. Very often it is discomfort with the setting, and it resolves the moment the setting changes.
If your daughter is at this age and has become quieter in her classes, it is worth simply asking her whether she would prefer a female teacher, and making clear that either answer is completely fine.
What it means in practice, not just in principle
Requesting a female tutor should not mean accepting anything narrower. In a well-run academy it changes exactly one variable:
- The same courses — Qaida, reading, Tajweed, Hifz, tafseer and Islamic studies are all taught by female tutors, including full Hifz programmes
- The same qualifications — Ijazah and/or degrees in Quranic sciences, assessed on recitation and on teaching, with no separate lower bar
- The same price — a female tutor is not a premium option, and any academy charging more for one is telling you something
- Camera policy on your terms — classes work fully on audio and screen-share, and many of our students keep the camera off in every lesson
- The trade-off is scheduling: popular after-school and evening slots with female tutors fill first, so give two or three preferred times rather than one
Questions worth asking before you book
Whichever way you decide, these will tell you what you need to know:
- Will my daughter have the same tutor every week, or a rotating pool?
- What is your camera policy, and is it genuinely optional?
- If she wants to change tutor later, how does that work and does it cost anything?
- Can I sit in on classes, and is that welcome or merely tolerated?
- How do you handle a student who has gone quiet — is there a mechanism, or does it go unnoticed?
And if she does not mind either way
Plenty of girls genuinely do not mind, and there is no virtue in engineering a preference she does not hold. The point of the question is not to arrive at a particular answer; it is to make sure the answer is hers and that the option was offered rather than assumed.
What matters far more than the tutor's gender is that she is taught by someone patient, that the slot is protected, and that she associates the Quran with an hour she enjoys. A child who likes her teacher keeps going for years. That is the whole of it.
