There is a particular experience familiar to anyone who has memorised Juz Amma without Arabic: reciting a surah hundreds of times in prayer while having only the vaguest sense of what it says. The words are on your tongue and the meaning is somewhere else entirely.

This course starts by attacking exactly that. We begin with the surahs you already recite in salah, take them word by word, and connect the Arabic you already say to what it actually means — which is why students consistently report that their concentration in prayer changes within the first few weeks.

A translation tells you what the words say. Tafseer tells you what they mean — the occasion of revelation, what a phrase meant to its first listeners, how a verse relates to others on the same subject, and what the scholars derived from it.

Both are needed. A verse translated without context is easy to misread; a verse recited without translation is easy to ignore. Our classes give you the literal meaning first and then the commentary, drawing on classical works such as Tafsir Ibn Kathir and al-Tabari, presented in accessible English.

You recite the passage, your tutor gives the word-by-word meaning, and then the commentary — the context of revelation, the key vocabulary that recurs elsewhere in the Quran, and the practical lesson. You then talk through what it means for your own life, which is the part that makes it stick.

Because classes are one-on-one, you can stop and ask the question you would never ask in a lecture hall. Most of the real learning in this course happens in those questions.

The Quran's vocabulary is far smaller than it appears — a few hundred roots account for the majority of the text. Your tutor flags recurring roots as they appear, so after a few months you begin recognising words in passages you have never formally studied. That compounding is the single most motivating part of the course.
